Mandatory anger management courses for all gun owners? Refresher courses to be taken every ten years? This is the news that many Americans woke up to, as it’s announced that a Florida legislator has drafted a bill to force everyone who owns, or intends to buy a gun to take anger management courses before they are allowed control of the weapons. There will also be a mandatory three day cooling off period after completing the course until the buyer is allowed the purchase the gun.

With a mixed reaction from Florida residents, many people thought it was a joke when they first saw the headline, and very few believe it’s realistic to implement.

“When I first saw it, I thought it had to be a joke,” said Sean Caranna, executive director of Florida Carry, a non-profit group championing the right to bear arms.

People who want to buy a firearm will be required to present a certificate showing that they have completed an anger management course at least three days prior to purchase. The anger management course must have lasted for a period of at least 2 hours, and can be conducted through face to face counselling, or through online platforms such as Skype.

Jon Gutmacher, an Orlando attorney and author of “Florida Firearms: Law, Use & Ownership,” told FoxNews.com “that the bill would almost certainly be found to be unconstitutional based on prior restraint.”

Whatever your opinion on the bill, you can be assured that there is going to be outrage from pro gun campaigners, and maybe this is a warranted outrage. Whilst guns have caused a lot of problems in America recently, limiting the ability to buy a gun dependant on an anger management course is like telling all smokers they must complete a 2 hour breathing meditation course before filling their lungs with smoke.
